JOB SUMMARY:
We are seeking an experienced and knowledgeable Conservation Structural Engineer to join
our team. The successful candidate will work within our Heritage Team undertaking
inspections of existing and heritage buildings, preparing written reports, providing advice on
repairs and alterations. They will also be involved with leading small teams of engineers and
technicians in relation to the design of repairs, alterations and extensions to historic
buildings. This role requires a strong foundation in engineering principles, with a passion for
building conservation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Undertake site inspections / investigations and prepare technical reports describing and
assessing the defects in the buildings which may include: historical movement; decay of
materials; structural inadequacies or defects; inappropriate repairs to a historic building;
ground movement; subsidence/heave damage; collapse etc.
• Ensure compliance with heritage conservation principles and good practice.
• Engage with other members of design team.
• Engage with stakeholders including Conservation Officers, Historic England etc
• Supervision of alteration and maintenance work on old and historic buildings.
• Preparation of expert witness reports.
• Project control, co-ordination and contract administration.
• Preparation of method statements and risk assessments.
• Design for new build and refurbishment, in modern and traditional materials using
modern and traditional techniques and details.
• Construction detailing in modern and traditional materials.QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, or a
related field.
• Professionally qualified as Chartered Engineer, preferably with MIStructE status.
• Have attained, or be demonstrably close to obtaining, CARE accreditation.
• Minimum 10 years of experience in conservation or heritage preservation.
• Five years of CPD record including a focus on historic building conservation.
• Passion for historic building work together with environmental stewardship and
sustainable development.
• Full driving licence.
ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
• Strong knowledge of structural engineering principles and conservation principles and
techniques and statutory requirements.
• Excellent communication, analytical, and project management skills.
• Experience of working in historic building conservation.
• Report writing.
• Preparation of fee proposals.
PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Proficiency in engineering software (e.g. TEDDS, Tekla Structural Designer, CADS 3D
Max).
• Experience with using IStructE Carbon Calculator Tool.
• Familiarity with LEED, BREEAM, or other sustainability frameworks.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Full-time post.• The role is office based in Manchester with site visits as required.
• Sites are predominantly located in North West England but may be anywhere in UK.
