Overall Purpose of Role
To provide specialist structural engineering expertise in wind loading calculations and temporary works design, assessment, and approval, ensuring safe and compliant temporary structures throughout cladding remediation and construction projects.
The role encompasses:

Calculations of the wind loading on structures.

Review of scaffold loads, hoarding designs, and temporary access systems.

Focus on interaction with existing buildings and compliance with CDM 2015 regulations.

Fostering a culture of continuous improvement and maintaining the Golden Thread of Information.
Overall Responsibilities
-
Lead Verification: Lead temporary works design verification and approval processes across multiple projects, ensuring compliance with BS 5975 2019, PAS 8812 2016, and relevant British Standards.

Building Safety: Champion the Golden Thread of Information, ensuring comprehensive digital documentation and traceability in accordance with Building Safety Act requirements.

Professional Development: Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, including emerging guidance on temporary works and Building Safety Regulator requirements.

Mentorship: Contribute to performance management within the Design & Quality function, including mentoring junior engineers and knowledge sharing.

Representation: Represent temporary works expertise in project, client, and cross-departmental meetings to ensure alignment with Lawtech’s safety objectives.
Operational Responsibilities
1. Temporary Works Assessment & Design
-
Scaffold Load Assessment: Review and assess temporary lateral scaffold loads and their structural effects on existing buildings, including superstructure and substructure impacts.

Structural Impact Evaluation: Assess effects on external grounds, ancillary buildings, and podium roofs of below-ground car parks, considering static and dynamic loading.

Load Distribution Design: Calculate and specify required spreaders, base plates, and load transfer mechanisms for scaffold standards and construction hoists.

Hoarding and Welfare: Review and approve hoarding designs and site accommodation structural arrangements in accordance with BS 5975 and BS EN 1991-1-4.
2. Wind Load Calculation

Calculate wind loading in accordance with the latest Eurocodes (BS EN 1991-1-4), including detailed building zone definition.

Produce structured calculation sets for Building Control approval and Building Safety Regulator submissions.

Analyse elevations, building recesses, and architectural projections impacting wind behavior.
-
Undertake wind tunnel or desk-based analyses for funnelling effects and local wind acceleration.

TG20:21 Compliance: Generate and verify compliance sheets to meet “generally recognised standard” requirements under Work at Height Regulations 2005.
3. Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management

CDM 2015 Compliance: Assess and document designer’s risk, preparing comprehensive risk assessments and mitigation strategies.

Technical Documentation: Prepare detailed calculations, drawings, and specifications for audit and inspection purposes.

Site Support: Provide technical support during installation, inspection, and removal of temporary works.
4. Project Coordination & Stakeholder Management

Liaise with clients, consultants, manufacturers, and architects to deliver efficient design outcomes.

Coordinate with commercial, health & safety, contracts, and procurement departments.

Organise and chair design coordination meetings relevant to temporary works.

Skills & Essential Qualifications

Education: BEng/MEng in Civil or Structural Engineering.

Certification: Chartered Engineer CEng with ICE or IStructE.

Specialism: MSc in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering.

Safety: CITB Temporary Works Coordinator certification & Current CSCS (Black card Professional level).

Technical Knowledge: * Comprehensive knowledge of BS 5975 2019 and PAS 8812:2016.

Thorough understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 designer duties.

Software: Proficiency in structural analysis software (STAAD.Pro, SAP2000, Robot).

Experience: Detailed experience in wind loading calculations for complex building geometries, including facade zone differentiation and funnelling effects.
