Role Objective
This role leads and develops technical excellence in structural and civil engineering for wastewater infrastructure projects.
As Technical Lead, you will be responsible for the design and delivery of structures, hydraulics, tanks, pumping stations, buildings, and temporary works, ensuring every project meets the highest standards of safety, quality, and innovation.
You will play a key role in delivering Severn Trent Water’s capital programme, providing expert guidance, driving design quality, and supporting continuous improvement across the engineering team.
Key Responsibilities
• Lead and set the technical direction and design standards for all civil and structural elements within wastewater projects.
• Ensure every design meets UK regulations, CDM requirements, and Severn Trent Water standards.
• Oversee the production of outline and detailed designs for structures, tanks, pumping stations, and hydraulic systems, ensuring robust, efficient, and cost-effective solutions.
• Mentor and guide engineers and apprentices, building capability and confidence across the design team.
• Promote innovation and sustainability, introducing new materials, design methods, and digital tools to improve outcomes.
• Act as the technical authority for all structural and civil engineering aspects within wastewater capital projects.
• Work closely with other discipline leads to deliver integrated, multi-disciplinary solutions.
• Maintain a strong focus on design assurance, ensuring compliance, quality, and safety throughout project delivery.
• Develop and implement standard design approaches to improve consistency, efficiency, and delivery performance.
• Capture and apply lessons learned from completed projects to enhance technical standards and future design work.
• Build and maintain effective relationships with stakeholders, suppliers, and contractors, staying informed of industry developments and best practices.
• Support the Learning and Development strategy, promoting technical growth across the design community.
Experience Required
• Extensive experience leading civil and structural engineering design for major capital projects, ideally in the water or wastewater sector.
• Proven ability to produce and review designs for tanks, pumping stations, hydraulic systems, buildings, and temporary works.
• Experience in related sectors such as energy, rail, or highways is advantageous.
• Strong background in mentoring engineers, managing design teams, and promoting technical excellence.
• A well-developed industry network and strong relationships with suppliers, contractors, and stakeholders.

Qualifications
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the ICE, IStructE, or equivalent professional body.
• Proven expertise in civil and structural engineering for water or wastewater projects.
• Full UK driving licence required.
