The Role:

As a Senior Structural Engineer within our Building Control department, you will act as the Council’s specialist advisor on the many technical aspects and policies relating to building design, materials, construction techniques, and building regulations.

You’ll play a key role in helping us review building regulation applications – ensuring that all new buildings and the proposed alterations to existing buildings are designed and constructed in accordance with the relevant regulations, codes and standards. This could include proposals for full refurbishment and structural alterations in historic buildings, new build complex and high-rise developments, or temporary structures and stands for events like Notting Hill Carnival.

You’ll undertake site inspections for complex projects to assess the works on site and advise Building Control Surveyors as necessary. You’ll also be part of the Dangerous Structures 24-hour stand-by rota, attending out-of-hours calls when necessary to ensure public safety.

As a vital member of the Building Control Department, you’ll also be involved in the creation and development of structural engineering policy, guidance, and advice. You’ll regularly liaise with internal and external stakeholders to communicate any changes to policies that they need to be aware of and to ensure all of the relevant teams and organisations are up-to-date with the building regulations and the standards they must uphold.

About You:

We’re looking for an experienced structural engineer who has a deep understanding of the latest policies and compliance frameworks in relation to building regulations and construction methods.

You’ll have previously worked in a role where you performed hands-on design for complex projects, third-party checks and reviews for compliance, visited construction sites and made sure that building structures were up to standard.

Collaboration and careful consideration are vital for this role, so we’re looking for an excellent team player with strong communication skills. You’ll be able to frame technical language in a clear and understandable way to stakeholders, you’ll collect information from various sources in an organised and timely manner, and you’ll be able to negotiate with architects, designers, contractors, and those who submit planning applications when changes are required to their proposals.

Most importantly, we’re looking for someone who genuinely cares about the safety of others. While there are many technical aspects to this role, you and the wider team share a responsibility for the safety of the people who eventually use the many buildings we work on. We believe that it is the human aspect of this role which helps stakeholders genuinely care about the policies and regulations we ask them to follow.
