Senior Structural Engineer – Invisible Connections, Oxfordshire

Permanent

This is an excellent opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer to join our Thame office and become an integral part of a progressive, ambitious team of specialists, working on a diverse portfolio of reinforced concrete and hybrid construction buildings in the UK and Ireland.

Role and responsibilities

We offer technical and practical advice to specifiers, precasters and in situ concrete contractors, for the accurate selection and application of our products. Our business culture is based around a ‘can do’ attitude and we take great pride in our reputation as a supportive, reliable supplier. Our products continue to gain traction with all stakeholders, and our goal is to build on this momentum until our products become intrinsic to a build system considered ‘the norm’.

To enhance our engineering support, we wish to appoint a Senior Structural Engineer to our small team. We use in-house developed calculation software, supported by a library of guidance documents and technical memos. On-the-job product training will be provided but being able to work on your own initiative is important. Occasional foreign travel should be anticipated (e.g. Norway, Romania, The Netherlands) as well as visits to customers and specifiers in the UK as and when required.

What you’ll be doing

  • Interpret customer drawings and work accurately with our in-house spreadsheet tools, to provide load calculations and technical proposals. Prepare hand calculations if required.
  • Present ideas and proposals graphically, using industry recognised software programs.
  • Interact with all members of the client chain, including consultants, precasters and contractors, providing technical guidance and managing customer expectations to build on our trusted business relationships.
  • Lead and/or contribute to product innovation and evolution.
  • Play a key role in the management of technical and product documentation and initiatives.
  • Support our in-house product manufacturing capability and liaise with our European manufacturing partners.

What you’ll bring to the role

  • BEng or MEng or similar level qualification in civil or structural engineering.
  • Experience of working with reinforced concrete structures.
  • A working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis software.
  • The ability to judge and balance workload whilst maintaining permanent customer satisfaction.
  • The ability to communicate freely and clearly, orally (via Teams, telephone, in person) and in writing, at all levels of an organisation.
  • A willingness to mentor junior technical colleagues and/or commercially focussed colleagues.

Our ideal candidate will

  • Be mature in outlook, professional yet friendly, and place a high value on their personal reputation as well as that of the company.
  • Be motivated to go the extra mile when necessary and see their work as an adventure and not simply a means to an end.
  • As an enterprising and collaborative company, the willingness to ‘muck-in’ is essential, as is a natural willingness to show flexibility.
  • Experience of reinforced concrete design will be an obvious advantage, although we would rank a positive attitude and personality above specific experience in this sector, which can be learned.

This is a senior position within the company, reporting to the Operations Director. The salary and benefits package will be industry competitive and flexible according to the ability and experience of applicants, including an electric car, generous pension, private healthcare and bonus arrangement. We see this role as being primarily office based, although some home working can be accommodated if required.

To apply

If you feel these qualities describe you, we’d be delighted to hear from you. In the first instance, please contact our Operations Director, Derek Brown. CV’s can be emailed to derek@invisibleconnections.co.uk or alternatively phone Derek on 01844 266000 for an informal discussion about the opportunity.

No agencies please.

About Invisible Connections

‘Invisible Connections’ is the registered trademark of Invisible Connections AS, Norwegian developer and manufacturer of telescopic connectors for more than thirty years. Our ETA approved telescopic connectors solve two key construction applications: ‘invisible’ connections for precast concrete staircase construction and ‘invisible’ connections for precast concrete frame construction. Now in its twelfth year, Invisible Connections Ltd (based in Thame, Oxfordshire) is the primary distribution partner of Invisible Connections AS, with the remit to develop market opportunities in the UK and Ireland.

We are also specialist manufacturers of reinforcement continuity systems: FERBOX® and TERWA COUPLER CADDi® to application requirements. Unlike any other system available to the UK market, FERBOX casings are bespoke-manufactured in-house, in Thame. FERBOX was the first UK product of its type assessed to the requirements of EC2 by UK CARES.

In 2024, Invisible Connections Ltd became part of the worldwide Terwa Construction Group. Since then, we’ve introduced TERWA COUPLER CADDi as an extension to our reinforcement continuity offering. Fabricated in-house, and intended primarily for slipformed construction, but also appropriate for multiple applications, TERWA COUPLER CADDi means we now offer contractors a ‘one-stop shop’ for all their reinforcement continuity requirements.

From a buildability perspective, all our products typically appeal to concrete frame contractors who appreciate the ease with which precast or in situ elements can be connected. Precasters and engineers appreciate and rely upon our technical support and innovation. Architects appreciate the aesthetic of ‘clean lines’ wherever concrete elements are joined.

In short, all our products make Invisible Connections.
