Purpose of the Post
The Strategic Road Network (SRN) is one of Wales’ most vital infrastructure assets, valued at approximately £21 billion. While only 5% of total road length, it carries one-third of all road traffic.

What You’ll Be Doing
Working within the Asset Management and Standards branch, you will deliver technical governance for the operation and improvement of the SRN.
Key Focus Areas:

Technical Governance: Managing Technical Approval submissions for structural assessments and new designs.

Standards & Policy: Preparing National Application Annexes (DMRB) and auditing maintenance projects against Welsh Government standards.

Strategic Advice: Providing expertise to Trunk Road Agents, Local Authorities, and Contractors.

Risk & Data: Leveraging digital tools and risk-based approaches to improve the structures portfolio and maintain high-quality asset data.
Key Responsibilities

Drive Change: Act as the Technical Approval Authority contact for assessment and improvement projects.

Shape Excellence: Appraise submissions to ensure high standards and value for money.

Support Decisions: Manage risk registers and prepare briefings aligned with governance frameworks.

Promote Innovation: Champion sustainable construction and digital tools for long-term resilience.

Represent Wales: Engage with industry groups like the Bridge Owners Forum and UK Roads Leadership Group.

Note: This role requires applicants to be a Chartered Engineer. Candidates not yet chartered must demonstrate professional experience and a clear commitment to achieving chartership.
