At HSE, we work with one goal in mind – to help keep Britain’s workforce safe and healthy. We are the independent regulator for occupational health and safety in Great Britain, and our work touches virtually every sector of UK industry. We don’t just inspect workplaces and implement the law, we campaign for better H&S practice, craft and review guidance and regulations, provide specialist products and services, and produce crucial research and statistics.

We’re always seeking innovative and imaginative ways to build an effective health and safety culture: one that will protect people and save more lives. We influence not only individual employers but whole industry sectors. You could be part of it.

The role

Focusing on structural or civil engineering, you will work to manage risk in an effective way, while supporting innovation and increasing productivity. From carrying out on-site inspections to investigating accidents and incidents, it’s a hands-on role spanning situations that range from simple domestic jobs to complex multi-stakeholder projects. You could be identifying the cause of a structural collapse or providing technical assistance to colleagues undertaking complex investigations into serious incidents involving plant and equipment. You will also act as a reliable expert witness in high-profile health and safety prosecutions.

It's a dynamic and evolving area that's constantly presenting fresh challenges. To help you keep pace, we’ll support your continuing professional development, with a priority of helping you to master of the legal requirements of this frontline role.

Your background

We’ll make the most of your technical qualifications and experience, and give you every opportunity to further develop them. With a relevant degree and Chartered Engineer status (ICE, MIStructE or equivalent), you’ll have a sound working knowledge of civil or structural engineering. Having held positions that demonstrate professional responsibility for engineering activities, you’ll have a good understanding of contractual appointments, as well as the design, specification and practical application of design decisions on site. Analytical and highly organised, you will be able to assimilate complex technical information rapidly and convey it to a variety of audiences. Resilient, with strong communication skills, you’ll be able to support your opinions with clear explanations and evidence, both in person and via reports. A full driving licence is essential.

There’s a lot to look forward to here beyond the generous Civil Service pension and our commitment to flexible working. We put a high value on ongoing personal and professional development, so you can develop your expertise and technical knowledge even further as we offer access to learning opportunities tailored to your role. Upon taking up post, you will be entitled to 25 days annual holiday increasing to 30 days after 5 years' service, together with bank holidays and 1-day Civil

Service privilege leave.

Diverse perspectives and experiences are critical to our success and we welcome applications from all people from all backgrounds with the experience and skills needed to perform this role. We look forward to receiving your application.
