WSP has continued to grow its transport team across the UK with a new set of senior appointments that will help to support the delivery of Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects.
Katy Toms, one of the UK’s top women in the engineering sector has joined WSP as a senior engineer to be part of the highways team.
She has been continuously growing her experience over the past six-years obtaining her professional qualifications with the ICE in 2016 – Katy is now Chair of the ICE Plymouth City Club and Vice Chair of the South West Committee.
This year she achieved one of the proudest moments in her career by being named one of the Telegraphs’ Top 50 Women in Engineering.
Katy’s biggest project achievement to date is being part of the team that created Wales’ largest onshore windfarm, Pen y Cymoedd. Her role involved supporting the early design stages on the £365m scheme involving 76 wind turbines.

Nishani Sakizlis joins WSP as an Associate Director to lead the rail fire engineering team. She brings to the company a wealth of knowledge in fire safety engineering on surface and subsurface railway stations, rail and road tunnels and other buildings and infrastructures.
Not only does Nishani have 12 years of consultancy and design experience in projects across the UK and overseas including HS2, Crossrail and the Doha Metro she also has six years’ experience in research and development.
Nishani Sakizlis, WSP Associate Director said: “Fire engineering is an integral part of the ever growing construction industry and I would like to develop my skills further to meet this industry demand. The goals that WSP has for its projects are innovative and are compatible with my ideals.”
Aasif Variava has joined WSP after working for some of the largest global design companies including Arcadis, Atkins and CH2M.
Throughout his 18 years within the industry he has held some key technical and managerial positions including senior project manager, technical director and associate business director roles.
He now joins WSP’s London highways team as an Associate Director and Group Manager based out of the company’s Devonshire Square office.
During his career Aasif spent time in the Middle East where he completed some of his proudest work including two major national rail projects in the Middle East - Etihad National Rail in UAE and the Jeddah Metro project in Saudi Arabia.

I hope to successfully lead one of the largest highways design team in the Southeast of England.”
