This role is to enable Ocado to retain UK sector lead and to grow nationally and internationally through the development of new automation products and equipment.
Structural engineers at Ocado are innovators, responsible for designing structures that support the automation and machinery inside a warehouse, solve problems associated to existing structures, and develop turnkey solutions to achieve business needs.
A deep understanding of the interfaces with building solutions, architects and civil engineering contractors is essential and the prospective structural engineer should have designed structures manufactured from steel, aluminium alloys and composite materials.
Ideally, candidates will have experienced an environment where the structural design requires precision and accuracy in challenging environments that take into account temperature change, vibration and large dynamic forces. Engineers who may have designed large dynamic indoor structures such as roller coasters will be able to perform this role adequately with minimal training.
Working in close partnership with architects, multifunctional engineers and other design engineers, a structural engineer’s responsibility is to choose the appropriate construction materials, to meet design specifications for enabling warehouse automation and robotics. Structural engineers are often involved in inspecting the work and advising contractors.
A candidate with a background in designing (but not limited to) mezzanines, event rigging, crane racking, retractable roof domes using light structures, etc. will find this job appropriate and exciting to contribute to.
Reporting to the Design Manager in the research and development team.
Attending Brainstorming sessions, capturing vital details and developing concepts from there. This could be for elevated grid rails for transfer of machines at higher speeds, designing structural gantries for installation of equipment such as precision robots, or development of vibration proof maintenance areas on mezzanine floors.
Presenting the concepts to the wider team.
Making recommendations regarding doing the detail design in house or by a third party.
Supporting the transfer to a manufacturer for production
Solving engineering problems plus relevant investigation activities.
Approving and signing off drawings.
Optimising the performance of structures
Running finite element analysis / computer simulations to predict behaviour of structures under different conditions
Presenting boundary conditions and interact with the mathematical modelling team to conduct in-depth analysis of massive structures. This may be an in-house team or an external consultancy.
An Engineering Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent.
Experience investigating the properties of materials like structural steel, structural/architectural aluminium and concrete
Experience working out the load cases and stresses on different parts of a structure
Experience making sure that projects meet legal guidelines, environmental directives, and health and safety requirements
Expertise in structural CAD or Autodesk Inventor or similar software.
Experience and thorough knowledge of applying various standards and civil/structural codes.
A solid foundation of experience of structural design engineering, ideally working with significant structures. Experience of working with trusses, steel structures inside warehouses, designing warehouses for installation of sensitive machinery.
The ability to generate the supporting calculations required for a Technical File and Certification. (CE, UL CSA or other)
The ability to work within a team on multiple projects, to prioritise tasks and to manage your time.
Experience of delivering work packages to time and budget constraints.
Experience of system/component reliability. (Preferred).
Experience of working to Eurocodes
Experience of working to FEM standards
Willing to travel both in the UK and abroad to attend meetings and conferences.
